ATS-ready CV & cover letter

Applicant tracking software reads your CV before any human does. If it can't parse your columns, your text boxes or your PDF, you are rejected by a machine that never read a word you wrote.

The prettiest CV templates are the ones that fail hardest. Two-column layouts, icons, text boxes, headers and graphics all parse badly or not at all in an applicant tracking system — and most medium and large employers in the UK and US run one. Your CV gets scored on what the parser could read, which is often half of it.

So I write CVs that pass the parser cleanly and still read like a person wrote them. Plain structure, standard section headings, the keywords from the actual job description, and achievements with numbers attached rather than a list of duties copied from your contract.

What I change

  • Structure the ATS can read — single column, standard headings, no text boxes or tables, correctly ordered dates, and a file format that parses (usually .docx, not a designed PDF).
  • Keywords from the job description — matched honestly to what you have actually done, so you score against the role without claiming things you can't defend in an interview.
  • Achievements, not duties — 'reduced order processing time by 40%' instead of 'responsible for order processing'. Almost everyone has these; almost nobody writes them down.
  • A profile that says something — the top third of page one is what gets read. It has to say what you do, at what level, and what you want next.
  • The right conventions — UK CVs and US resumes differ on length, photos, personal details and phrasing. I write for the market you are applying to, not a generic mix of both.

What you get

  • An editable Word document you own outright, so you can tailor it for each application yourself.
  • A matching PDF for the applications that ask for one.
  • A cover letter written for a specific role, not a template with the company name swapped in (Standard and Full Kit).
  • A LinkedIn 'About' and headline rewrite that lines up with the CV (Full Kit or as an add-on).
  • A short note explaining what I changed and why, so you can keep it consistent when you update it in six months.

The templates

What your CV
actually looks like.

I build every CV on my own template system — six sector layouts, each in an ATS-safe version for the application portals and a presentation version for the human who reads it next.

The same CV in two versions: single-column ATS-safe layout beside a two-column presentation layout
Same content, two jobs. The left one has to survive a parser; the right one has to hold a recruiter's attention.

Questions

Before you ask.

What is an ATS and why does it matter?

An applicant tracking system is the software employers use to collect and filter applications. It parses your CV into fields and scores it against the job description before a recruiter sees a shortlist. If the parser cannot read your layout, you are filtered out without a human ever opening the file.

Will you write my CV from scratch or edit what I have?

Whichever gets the better result. If you have a CV I usually rebuild it — keeping your facts, dates and achievements but changing the structure and language. If you are starting from nothing, I will send you a short set of questions to pull the material out.

Do you write UK CVs or US resumes?

Both, and they are not the same document. A UK CV runs to two pages, carries no photo and uses British spelling. A US resume is usually one page, never includes date of birth or a photo, and phrases things differently. Tell me which market and I will write for it.

Can you guarantee I will get interviews?

No — that depends on your experience, the market and how many roles you apply for. What I can do is make sure you are not being filtered out for a formatting reason, and that a recruiter reading page one understands what you do in ten seconds.

Do you also fix LinkedIn profiles?

Yes. It comes with the Full Job Kit, or as a $25 add-on to any package. Recruiters search LinkedIn with the same keywords the ATS scores, so it is worth aligning the two.
